Management
It’s worse than we thought…
All the data (and my conversations with scores of companies) tells me that managers are struggling with new expectations. No longer do you just need your ‘regular’ management skills, no you need to understand flexible and hybrid working too. Well, according to a Chartered Management Institute report (as reported by The Guardian), very few are getting the training they need:
As many as 82% of new managers in the UK are what it calls “accidental managers” – embarking on the role with no formal training in management or leadership.
And it’s not working out very well.
Among those workers who told researchers they had an ineffective manager, one-third said they were less motivated to do a good job – and as many as half were considering leaving in the next 12 months.
Time to invest more in management training?
Return-to-office
Podcast guest Dan Bladen, CEO of Kadence, wrote a great post breaking down a new Bloomberg report on return-to-office trends.
Here’s how Dan summarised the highlights:
We’re still miles away from a global consensus on how and where to do our best work.
Europe leads the way with “right to disconnect” policies
Office real estate could drop up to $1.3 trillion in value by 2030

Flex Work
Another former podcast guest, McKinsey’s Phil Kirschner, nicely summarised their latest Women in the Workplace report.
Here’s his post, but I’ll give you my one big takeaway, selected from Phil’s big takeaways:
38% of mothers with young children say that without workplace flexibility, they would have had to leave their company or reduce their work hours.
